Lyra Keres works as a clerk for the Order of Thieves and lives under a curse from Zeus that makes lasting love impossible. Every hundred years, the gods choose mortal champions for the Crucible, a deadly contest that determines who will rule Olympus. Hades shocks everyone by selecting Lyra.

The tournament moves between modern San Francisco, divine realms, and lethal trials drawn from Greek mythology. Lyra survives through practical skill and stubbornness rather than sudden mastery, while Hades remains both her sponsor and a source of romantic danger.

The gradual attraction benefits from sharp dialogue and from Lyra's suspicion of divine motives. Some middle trials repeat a similar rhythm, but the larger mystery surrounding her selection and curse keeps the story moving.

This is a high-stakes mythology fantasy with violence, injury, death, abuse, sexual content, and a slow-burn romance. It is the first Crucible novel and ends on a major cliffhanger.
